JSS 2: Reacting and balancing of chemical equation (I)

A chemical equation is a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in which the reactants and products are denoted by their respective chemical formulae. An example of a chemical equation is the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to form water.
            2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(g)
             Reactant             Product

The reactant side is the part of the chemical equation to the left of the ‘→’ symbol whereas the product side is the part to the right of the arrow symbol.

Examples: Balance the following reactions
1. Al + O2 → Al2O3
2. N2 + H2 → NH3
Solution:
 1.4Al + 3O2 → 2Al2O3.
2. N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3.
React and balance the following:
1. FeCl3(s) + NaOH →
2. FeSO4 + NaOH →
3. Zn + HCl →
4. Mg + HCl →
5. Ca(OH)2 + HNO3 →
6. FeCl2 + NaOH →
7. Al(s)   + O2(g)

Solution:
1. FeCl3 + 3NaOH → 3NaCl + Fe(OH)3
2. FeSO4 + 2NaOH → Na2SO4 + Fe(OH)2
3. Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
4. Mg + 2HCl →  MgCl2 + H2
5. Ca(OH)2 + 2HNO3 → Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O
6. FeCl2 + 2NaOH → Fe(OH)2 + 2NaCl
7. 4Al(s)   +  3O2(g)2Al2O3(s)

                   ASSIGNMENT

1. Fe2O3 + C → Fe + CO2(g)

2. H2SO4 + CaCO3  → CaSO4 + H2CO3

3. H2(g) + O2(g) → H2O(g)

5. AgNO3 + LiOH → AgOH + LiNO3

6. CH4 + O2(g) → CO2(g) + H2O(g)
