JSS 3: STEEL

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, containing about 0.1% to 2.0% carbon.
The composition of Steel are:
1. Iron (Fe) – the main metal
2. Carbon (C) – increases strength and hardness.
                          Types of Steel
1. Mild Steel (Low Carbon Steel): It contains a small amount of carbon.
it is soft, tough, and easy to shape.

2. Medium Carbon Steel: Stronger and harder than mild steel.

3. High Carbon Steel: Very hard and strong but less flexible.

4. Stainless Steel:
It contains carbon, Iron, chromium and nickel. It resists rust and corrosion.

                   Properties of Steel
1. It is strong and durable
2. It is hard and tough
3. It can withstand heavy loads
4. It can be shaped into different forms
5. It is resistant to wear
6. Stainless steel is resistant to rust and corrosion

                     Uses of Steel
1. Steel is used for construction of buildings and bridges
2. For manufacturing  vehicles
3. For manufacturing railway tracks
4. For manufacturing ships and pipelines
5. For manufacturing machines and industrial equipment
6. For manufacturing kitchen utensils and cutlery (stainless steel)
7. For making tools such as hammers, chisels, and spanners

                   Advantages of Steel
1. It has high strength
2. It is long-lasting
3. It can be recycled 
4. It can easily be fabricated into different shapes

               Disadvantages of Steel
1. Ordinary steel rusts when exposed to moisture.
2. Stainless steel is more expensive than ordinary steel.

                Relative Atomic Mass The Relative Atomic Mass (RAM) of an element is the average mass of its atoms compared with one-twelfth (¹/₁₂) of the mass of one atom of carbon-12. The carbon-12 isotope (¹²C) is used as the standard for measuring atomic masses. Relative atomic mass of an element  = average mass of one atom of element     ¹/₁₂ × the mass one carbon -12 atom                     Relative Moleculer Mass Relative Molecular Mass ( RMM ), also called Molecular Weight, is the sum of the relative atomic masses (RAM) of all the atoms present in a molecule.
